Abruzzo is a region in Italy known for its pristine nature and authenticity. One of the Abruzzo reserves is Punta Aderci, created to protect the unique ecosystem of this coastal area. We can admire a variety of landscapes here – from golden beaches, through rocky coast, to green hills.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is in Pescara. It is served by low-cost airlines. If you have a car, there is a large parking lot close to the viewpoint. The best public transport option is to take a train to Porto di Vasto station. The journey by regional train takes about 49 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs 6 euros. It’s best to check the timetable in advance as connections are every one to two hours. From the train station, it’s about a 20-30 minute walk. The route is not difficult, but half of it, near the station, is an industrial zone. There are a few warehouses there. So, don’t be discouraged by the initial few meters, the views later on make up for it.

Punta Aderci – The Adriatic without the crowds

Punta Aderci is a paradise for nature lovers. This area is home to many species of birds, such as the sea plovers. A characteristic element of the landscape are trabocchi, wooden structures used for fishing. They can be found in Abruzzo, Molise, and Apulia. The stretch of coast near Punta Aderci, due to their large concentration, is called Costa dei Trabocchi.

Warning: During our stay, while passing the earlier mentioned parking lot on foot, we encountered a wild boar. So, it’s worth being vigilant during walk, especially if traveling with children.

The central point of the reserve is a viewpoint on a high cape jutting out into the sea, offering a magnificent panorama. You can descend to the beaches on both sides. Small, marked, wooden stairs lead to Punta Penna beach. The climbing up is quite demanding.

An attractive option is also a several-kilometer trek along the trail by the sea and reserve. You can then return by train from the neighboring station in Casalbordino-Pollutri. Remember that there is no tourist infrastructure in the reserve, so it’s better to bring your own provisions.
